Grocery Stores Our steps towards developing a community owned grocery store begin with developing a farmers market first. We believe, the farmers market enables the community a chance to know their farmers, while identifying the stakeholders locally to increase the probability for a successful grocery store. MO' BETTER FOOD MAIL: |
OUR HISTORY The Mo'Better Food Market was a farmers market that started at McClymonds high School in West Oakland in 1998. In 2001, David Roach, co-directed the West Oakland Food Collaborative which received a three year grant from the U.S.D.A to expand the Mo' Better Food Market (later renamed to The Mandela Farmers Market) and to plan a community owned Grocery store. Today's, Mandela Food Cooperative Grocery is open for business. It was intially started through the West Oakland Food Collaborative. We believe our model can work in any community. If you are interested in starting one in your community, we offer consultation in getting your up and going. |
