DID YOU KNOW?
According to the 2007 U.S Census, the African American population in California is 6.7%. (2,450,444).
According to 2007 Agcensus, African American farmers make up less than 1/3 of 1% of all the farmers in California (around 370 farmers in total).

Who will supply healthy food for the African American commmunity?

We asked this question in 1996 at the Mo' Better Food Conference in San Francisco. The Mo' Better Food Conference brought together Black farmers, urban gardeners, church leaders to answer the above question.

We thought naturally, African American farmers should supply healthy food in our neighborhoods. But we really wanted to raise the topic to leave the Mo' Better Food Conference with a community agenda.

Where are the Black farmers?

How many do we have? What do they grow? These were the questions raised during the conference and we left in pursuit to answer.

What do you think?

David Roach receives "Outstanding Community Service Award" from the National Morehouse Alumni Association at homecoming November 2009.

Since, so few African Americans are actually involved in farming, we believe, there is a corollation between the few Black farmers actually farming, and the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables available in our communities. We believe, if we promote and support African Americans to participate in agriculture, we will have mo' access to healthy foods, create new jobs, reduce the cost of food and have a better diet.
OUR ROLE
Mo' Better Food's role has been to protect, preserve, and promote the well being of Blacks in agriculture by establishing markets for our produce.
in communities that lack access to fruits and vegetables first.

OUR STRATEGY
Establish markets within the community.

FOOD SCARCITY
Today, many predominately African American communities throughout the United States have been defined as "food insecure." A term used to say, the residents do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

For example, the state of California has the largest agricultural industry in the United States, yet most of the Black communities within California are food insecure.

OUR PLEDGE
We must provide places that enable our farmers to get their food to the people. The more we do these things, the more we will build Healthy economics.

THE SOLUTION
BUILD HEALTHY ECONOMICS
